President's Spin for March

February may be the shortest month of the year, but it has been very busy for the WCC executive.  The Feb. 23rd meeting covered many topics which I’m sure the membership will be interested in.

 

  • We are holding off with our plans to apply for liability insurance through the MCA until Ron Brown the Executive Director returns from a risk assessment meeting in Ottawa.
  • We are going to continue to use the MCA site for online memberships. There were communication problems in the 2009 season between the club and the MCA, but we believe this was just due to the introduction of the system. There was a question about waivers when using the online registration. We are assured that completed electronic forms were legally binding, but it may be prudent to require those that use the service to be asked to sign a paper form also. It was decided to ask for a signed waiver. This policy will be explained at the spring meeting.
  • It was brought to our attention that the club is on Facebook. This page has no information on it. It was thought that this may be a tool to direct interested cyclist to the club or to its web site. No one on the executive has had any experience or proficiency with Facebook. If anyone is interested in managing a page on Facebook for the club, please contact the President Bob Kelly.
  • We have begun a review of the executive roles and responsibilities. The club has had many changes since it was founded and renewing its executive responsibilities is overdue. The two areas that need the most work are the positions of V-President and Editor. We would also wish to extend voting rights to all the positions ( Reporter, Editor & Webmaster).Some of the revisions will need a change in the club constitution, so a motion with the proposed changes will be published on the web site before the next AGM followed by a vote at the AGM. If you have any concerns or comments please contact one of the executive members.   
  • The name “Winnipeg Cycling Club (1988) Inc.” has been reserved. We have a few more steps to complete to meet all the legal requirements of the name change. The process should be completed by the spring meeting in April.
  • The web site has been changed to www.winnipegcyclingclub.ca . Both the old and new web site will be maintained for the 2010 season.
  • Club Committees – I would like to thank the members who have volunteered to help out with the ride schedule.
    • A draft of the Day Ride schedule has been but together and there is one more meeting to finalize it. The rides will be a balance of new and old, off-road and road. The long weekends will be left open with members encourage to initiate rides of their choices. The club will support through the web site or club emails.( subject to all riders are covered by the MCA waiver)
      • The committee consists of –   Dan T (Coordinator), George S, Arnie J, Roger L.
    • A draft of the Wednesday Ride has also been completed. The final draft will be finish soon, when the new ride descriptions and route directions are done. The Wed. committee has tried to incorporate many of the new trails around Winnipeg. They also saw a need to find more starting points to utilize the new pathways with out making the rides to long or difficult for novice riders.
      • The ride committee consists of – Rick K (Coordinator), Berre H, Dan T, Bob K, and Kaye G
  • Club events
    • Spring meeting “2010 Kick-Off” April 6th 6:30 PM @ U of W room 3M69.  A notice will be emailed two weeks in advance and a follow up phone call one week before the meeting. If you wish to contribute to the agenda contact Bob (President). If you wish to help with the event or volunteer to do some phoning please contact Kaye (V-President).
    • Spring BBQ – Last year we held a BBQ at the beginning of the 2009 cycling season at Forte Whyte’s Buffalo Stone Café. Due to the positive response we plan to hold it again.  We are now trying to secure a date in May on a week day. The estimated cost will be $20.00 per person, open to all. If you wish to help with the event contact Kaye (V-President). More information will be forth coming.
  • Club logo – we are encouraging WCC members to take part in a poll on whether to keep our old logo or replace it with a new one. The poll will be on the web site until the end of March. If you have any comments or logo designs you wish to share, contact Bob (President).
  • Telephone ride information call number – We are looking into the feasibility of establishing a phone information line for the status of rides i.e.: ride cancelations, start location, etc. We hope to have more info on this in the coming months.
  • Once again I would like to thank Tim Woodcock of Woodcock Cycle Works for the generous offer of his lunch room for our monthly meeting. Our next meeting is March 16th, 6:00 PM at Woodcock Cycle Works, 433 St. Mary’s Road.
